BAB I

P E N D A H U L U A N

A. DESKRIPSI

Modul ini disusun dengan maksud untuk meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam berkomunikasi dengan menggunakan Bahasa Inggris untuk menyebutkan ungkapan – ungkapan yang berhubungan dengan Hobbies & Interests.

B. PRASYARAT

Sebelum mempelajari Modul ini, siswa harus telah :

1. mengenal istilah – istilah yang berhubungan dengan Hobbies & Interests,

seperti :

- spare time

- interests

- interested in]

- spend

- prefer

- ds.

2. mempunyai gambaran tentang Hobbies & Interests dalam kehidupan sehari –

hari seperti :

- swimming

- playing football

- cycling

- dsb.

C. PETUNJUK PENGGUNAAN

* Baca dan pelajari setiap informasi.

* Setelah mengerti dan memahami uraian pada lembar informasi, silakan kerjakan

* Apabila telah paham dan bias mengerjakan lembar latihan, silakan praktikkan

* percakapan / dialog sebagai implementasi dari penguasaan modul

D. TUJUAN AKHIR

Setelah mempelajari modul ini, siswa dapat:

a. mengungkapkan ekpresi tentang Hobbies & Interests,

b. memerankan Tanya jawab tentang Hobbies & Interests,

c. mengidentifikasi pernyataan benar – salah (True – False) berdasarkan teks bacaan tentang Hobbies & Interests,

d. menulis komposisi tentang Hobbies & Interests,

e. menggunakan ekspresi tersebut dalam komunikasi dengan baik dan benar.

a. Kompetensi : kemampuan untuk berkomunikasi dalam Bahasa

Inggris pada level Elementary.

(ii) Gerund as a subject

- Swimming is my hobby.

- Fishing is what I like to do most.

- Jogging is an activity that I usually do on Sundays.

(iii) Gerund as an object

- I like shopping in a mall.

- Do you enjoy traveling?

(iv) Gerund after prepositions

- She is interested in climbing mountains.

- They are very fond of playing football.

(v) Study the following dialog and then practice it with your friend (Pair work)!

Rini and Dita are sitting in front of their classroom. They are talking about

their hobbies.

Rini : ”What do you do in your spare time, Dita?”

Dita : ”I usually go dancing. What about you?”

Rini : ”I like swimming. I usually do swimming in TIRTA KENCANA

swimming pool not far from my house. I go there twice a week, on

Sunday morning and Thursday afternoon at about three o’clock. How

about you Dita? Where do you usually go dancing?

Dita : ”I join a dancing club at Jalan Gajahmada no. 10. The club is GO

YOUNG DANCING CLUB. I dance in the club once a week, every

Saturday afternoon, at four o’clock.

Rini : ”Well, the bell is ringing. Let’s go into the classroom.”

Dita : ”OK.”

Hobbies & Interests

From Monday until Friday most people are busy working or studying, but in the evening and on weekends they are free to relax and enjoy themselves. Some watch television or go to the movies, others participate in sports. It depends on individual interests. There are many different ways to spend our spare time.

Almost everyone has some kind of hobby. It may be anything from collecting stamps to making model airplanes. Some hobbies are very expensive, but others don’t cost anything at all. Some collections are worth a lot of money; others are valuable only to their owners.

I know a man who has a coin collection worth several thousand dollars. A short time a go he bought a rare fifty-cent piece worth $250! He was very happy about his purchase and thought the price was reasonable. On the other hand, my youngest brother collects match boxes. He has almost 600 of them but I doubt if they are worth any money. However, to my brother they are extremely valuable. Nothing makes him happier that to find a new match box for his collection.

That’s what a hobby means. I guess. It is something we like to do in our spare time simply for the fun of it. The value in dollars is not important, but the pleasure it gives us.

bebas) dengan menggunakan kurang lebih 100 kata.

Setelah para siswa menyelesaikan modul ini, diharapkan siswa mampu menguasai kompetensi yang ada di dalamnya. Selanjutnya para siswa diwajibkan untuk mengikuti uji kompetensi di mana para siswa akan mendapatkan sertifikat sebagai bukti bahwa siswa yang bersangkutan telah menguasaai kompetensi dimaksud dan dapat melanjutkan ke modul berikutnya dengan kompetensi yang lebih tinggi.
